Marick Press Internships
Internships at Marick Press Beginning and advanced internships are available to students at the Wayne State University Communications department and Journalism School during the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters. Internships, worth four college credits, require that a student work at Marick Press at least twenty hours a week. To qualify for internships, students must complete an application which is reviewed by the director of the departments and Publisher of Marick Press. Internships are competitive — students should apply during registration week for the following semester. While all students are welcome to apply, preference is usually given to juniors and seniors with successful completion of a composition class, public relations and print majors. No prior experience in the publishing field is required; however, a background in writing, computers, or communications is an asset. For more information, contact Marick Press at (313)407-9236. The overall responsibilities of every intern include answering the telephone and correspondence; taking book orders; communicating with poets, vendors, and other publishing professionals and the general public; and providing a first impression of the press to callers. Additional intern projects include:- Creating press kits
- Designing advertisements
- Designing book catalogs
- Writing press releases
- Coordinating manuscript submissions
- Writing advertising copy
- Interviewing poets and posting the interviews in blogs and websites
- Processing book orders
- Learning Adobe InDesign and Photoshop
Marick Press is not-for-profit literary publisher, founded to preserve the best work by poets of the American Midwest, including many underpublished women poets. Marick Press has expanded its scope, presenting the work of poets from across the nation whose work is selected through our national competition, the Marick Poetry Prize, or by general submission. Marick Press seeks out and publishes the best new poetry from an eclectic range of aesthetics — poetry that is technically accomplished, distinctive in style, and thematically fresh. In 2008 Marick Press will establish the Marick Poetry Prize, an award for a book-length collection of poetry judged by a poet of national repute. Through a B.A and a M.A. program in Journalism at Wayne State University, Marick Press permits graduate students enrolling in publishing courses the opportunity for hands-on experience in the daily business of a small press, including initial manuscript readings, pre-press production, and marketing tasks. An undergraduate internship is available each semester as well for qualified students. Marick Press is grateful for the support it receives from donors through the events organized by the press and its annual fundraising campaign.
